After many days of begging, and a ripped up IOU for one dollar, I finally convinced Ryo (My best friend) to play test the Monsuno game with me.
After quickly reading over the small instruction booklet (Labeled "Quick core combat") which came with the Monsuno two pack I got, that claimed to be the intermediate rules, we set up and began the game.
The first thing I noticed is how remarkably long it takes to finish. While the game is fun, the Monsuno we were using had quite low strike damage, very high Hit Points, and since the sensitivity of the trigger mechanism is quite finicky, the gameplay almost turns into a Battleship style hit-and-miss until one Monsuno runs out of HP. This version of the game has next to no strategy involved, your only allowed to use one Monsuno over and over again, and strike cards are about useless. I think these rules could be vastly improved by letting players use more than one Monsuno, and giving the defender a chance to use a strike card each turn. This would remove some of the monotonous gameplay.
Now one the other hand, you have the Monsuno trading card game (which I haven't played yet), that qualifys as the advanced rules. While these seem to have the complexity that I like, they don't involve the toys, my favorite part of Monsuno. But after searching store after store for the cards that were supposed to be released a few days ago, I still have yet to find the Monsuno
TCG where I live. What I needed was a combination of the two.
After being slightly disappointed by the "Quick core combat" rules, and my inability to play the card game, I thought to myself "Well that can't be it!". So I decided to check the website one more time to see if they had uploaded the rules yet. It claimed that "Quick core combat" is the basic set rules (That explains a lot). And different set of rules (The actual intermediate rules) were available for pdf download. After reading the manual for regular "Core combat", I realized it was the exact combination of the intermediate, and advanced rules that I had been looking for! But sadly I still didn't have enough cards to play. So I guess I'll get back to you once I pick up a couple booster packs, and convince Ryo to try again. Until then, see you next time!
